World Alzheimer’s Month

September 2012 is the first global World Alzheimer’s Month, an international campaign to educate and raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.September 21st, is World Alzheimer’s Day, as assigned by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1994. Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease that has become a global health issue.

The theme of this year’s World Alzheimer’s Month is “Dementia: Living Together“. Alzheimer’s associations all over the world are focusing their efforts on reducing the stigma associated with dementia and helping local communities to be more dementia-friendly.

Misconceptions about Alzheimer’s and dementia are common, so encouraging a better understanding amongst the public is very important. By helping people better understand dementia, the symptoms, and the extent to which Alzheimer’s can progress, we help the patients, their family members and their caregivers cope. Because the population is aging, the number of people with Alzheimer’s will continue to rise.

Activities and events planned across the globe will include educational seminars, workshops, walks and social events for people with dementia and their carers. For more information, or to find events near you visit https://www.alz.co.uk/world-alzheimers-month.
