Staying calm in a real emergency

This month, we want to recognize a situation that shows exactly what strong caregiving looks like in action.

What happened could happen to any of us.

The Situation

Febi arrived for her shift and noticed something wasn’t right.

The client didn’t answer the door. After trying to call with no response, she didn’t walk away. She took a moment to look further and through the window, she saw the client lying on the floor, unresponsive.

What She Did Next

She stayed calm. She immediately contacted the office and remained on the phone while the team coordinated next steps.

From there:

  • Emergency services were contacted right away
  • Family members were reached and informed
  • Access challenges were handled while responders were on the way

Febi stayed present through it all.

When emergency responders arrived and gained access, she remained on-site, supporting both the client and the family during a stressful moment.

The Outcome

The client was found responsive but unable to get up and was taken for further assessment.

Later, the family shared their gratitude:

“We are so grateful that Febi was there and for how everything was handled. Please extend our thanks.”

Going Above and Beyond

Even after the situation was under control, Febi stayed to help clean up the broken glass from the door used by emergency services.

That’s not just completing a shift.

That’s care.

Team Behind the Scenes

A strong response like this doesn’t happen alone.

Aldirene (Care Coordinator) and Hailey (Scheduler) stayed on the phone with family members throughout the situation, relaying what was happening in real time and keeping them informed every step of the way.

They maintained calm, clear, and professional communication during a stressful moment, helping ensure the family felt supported while everything was unfolding.

This is what teamwork looks like when it matters most.

What Other Caregivers Can Take From This

If you ever face a similar situation:

  • Trust your instincts if something feels off
  • Take a moment to assess the situation safely
  • Stay calm and contact the office immediately
  • Remain present until help arrives

You are not alone in these moments, the team is here to support you.

Thank You

Febi, Aldirene, Hailey – thank you for your calm, quick thinking, and commitment to your client.

Cassey & Ariene

One of our clients had wonderful things to say about Cassey & Ariene.

From the moment they arrive, they show respect in the smallest ways, like changing their shoes without being asked.

They don’t wait to be told what to do. They use their time to clean, organize, and keep the home comfortable, all while making sure the client feels engaged and cared for. Her words say it best:

“I tell all my friends Choice Homecare is like heaven, while all the other service providers are like a frosty night.”

Atinuke

Hugh, husband of our client Gayle, shared how much he appreciates the consistency and communication Atinuke brings to his home.

With multiple service providers involved, staying organized can be overwhelming. Atinuke makes it easier by always keeping in touch, reaching out proactively, and ensuring he has the most up-to-date weekly schedule.

Her communication helps bring clarity, reduces stress, and gives the family confidence that everything is on track.
